When his father established Mt Boothby Pastoral Company in the late 1970s, Andrew Johnson knew farming would be his livelihood. He is now responsible for one of the state’s largest piggeries – a 10,000 acre enterprise in the Tintinara region.
Former director of Nuffield International, and Nuffield Australia chair, Andrew is confident about the future of SA’s pig industry, praising its progression of SA’s pork industry in quality assurance, food safety, welfare, environmental regulations, genetic improvements and bio energy production.
Andrew emphasises the importance of buying local, assuring a solid future for families like his, and his employees.
“The economic impact per sow is about $3000 back into the community, so that gives you an idea about what impact it has. The pig industry is incredibly important in our regions.”

22 years of age and in her final year of Agricultural Science, Elizabeth Ward is fortunate enough to spend most of her working week amongst grapevines and almond trees in SA’s McLaren Vale region.
With a curiosity for food production and a passion for our state’s abundance of premium produce, Elizabeth was driven to pursue a career in agribusiness, a sector in SA that is providing certainty for post graduate careers.
Her education has exposed her to crop, livestock and soil sciences, biology, biochemistry, genetics and animal health. Recently landing an internship with agricultural consultancy DJ’s Growers, Elizabeth is putting her education to practice, working in agronomy to detect pests and disease.
“One of the key selling points for students is that 91% of ag science graduates find full-time employment within months of finishing their degree.”,” she says.
