Uncovering South Australia’s creative talent.
South Australia is home to an impressive collection of locally produced craft beer, cider and spirits that are loved around the world.
We’re also home to skilled artisans creating handmade works, celebrated both in our state and on the international stage.
Robyn Wood is a talented designer running her studio from The Mill creative studios in Adelaide. Robyn’s work is recognised and sold across Australia, she creates furniture and bespoke objects for architects, galleries and “lovers of good design”.
After 20 years working as an interior architect, Robyn’s growing appreciation for design and woodwork inspired her to open her own studio in 2014.
Robyn ensures that the wood, steel and glass that she works are sourced locally and sustainably. Knowing her products origins matters to her and to her loyal followers, with admirers of her design attending markets just to thank her for products bought years ago.
“Collaboration fosters a tight knit creative community in SA” Robyn says.
“The collaboration and skill sets in SA are wonderful, we have so many great makers here.”
Fashion designer Anny Duff is the owner of South Australian based Good Studios. Her principles of sourcing ethically and sustainably throughout the supply chain has proved perfectly viable to produce quality and luxurious products.
Fashion design started as something on the side for Anny, but then it ‘took a life of its own’. After working in the film industry, Anny found herself longing to get back to the roots of her upbringing on an organic farm in Wistow. In 2012 Good Studios was born.
Good Studios pieces are designed and manufactured right here in Adelaide, using hemp linen and organic cotton, up-cycled nylon from salvaged fishing nets and Australian wool.
Anny’s passion for sustainability is setting a benchmark in the industry.
“SA is home to a growing network of makers with sustainable approaches. “
“Consumers are placing a lot more value on the handmade and it’s such a human thing to make. To be able to do it for a living is really special.”
Paul Vasileff is the talent behind internationally renowned couture label Paolo Sebastian. While Paul has achieved global success, he continues to choose South Australia as his home.
As a young boy Paul learned to sew under the guidance of his grandmother. He now heads a label that has become a national icon, captivating clientele and media with his whimsical designs that are inspired by fairy tales.
A perfectionist with a penchant for classic beauty, the Adelaide designer has impressed the industry with his expert tailoring and the scope of his creative vision.
Paul’s ideas are brought to life with a team of talented South Australians at his Gouger St Atelier. Here, they hand stitch every detail in a process that can take 1500 hours per piece.
“I’ve had the whole state behind me since day one. The success of Paolo Sebastian isn’t just mine,” says Paul.
“We’re only successful because of South Australia.”
Brendan and Laura Carter have changed the face of SA’s craft industries with their sustainable brands Applewood Distillery, Unico Zelo Wines and Harvest.
While both had a global upbringing, they chose South Australia as the base for their study and innovative business model.
Running a business that relies on local produce and community, Brendan says, “it would have been impossible to achieve our success elsewhere.”
“South Australia had such a close proximity to quality produce, which allows primary producers and value-adding enterprises such as us to thrive.”
“And a sheer sense of camaraderie that binds all of us together,” adds Laura.
