South Australia has a diverse and resilient mining sector headlined by significant deposits of copper, gold, iron ore, uranium, graphite and mineral sands. South Australia also has world-class renewable energy resources, much of which remain untapped, attracting investors in wind and solar power as well as energy storage.
South Australian geologist, engineer and OZ Minerals’ General Manager Transformation and Readiness. Katie’s impressive career path has led to her current role in guiding OZ Minerals’ progression in the industry as a modern mining company.
Originally based in Melbourne, OZ Minerals moved their headquarters to South Australia, and with it, came a change in their workforce, direction and vision, resulting in jobs like Katie’s, in order to be ready for changes in the mining sector.
OZ Minerals’ Carrapateena project is expected to create 1000 jobs from construction through to production. Upon completion, it will be a 4.5M tonne per annum operation with an estimated life of 20 years.
OZ Minerals’ projects, and Katie’s entry into the mining field at the early age of 17, is proof of the many opportunities available as the resources industry flourishes in South Australia.
“There are growing opportunities in energy and mining, for people with various levels of experience and fields of study” says Katie.
“We prioritise sustainable local employment and local procurement on our projects, and I believe there will be flow on opportunities for the next 20 years in the region.”
Lachlan Wallace’s diverse career in mining has taken him across the globe. Lachlan has now returned home to South Australia as General Manager of Hillgrove Resources, in the Adelaide Hills – a region believed to be one of the biggest untapped base metal provinces in Australia.
At the Kanmantoo copper mine, Lachlan and his team have integrated new technology, rock support and work practices to safely steepen the walls in the open pit; their ingenuity saving the company millions of dollars in waste movement per degree. With the end in sight for the current copper open pit mining operation, Lachlan looking ahead to the possibility of developing a pumped hydro storage facility as an innovative post mine land use option, as well as advancing regional exploration opportunities. The work that Hillgrove Resources does with the local community is recognised as the best in the industry, through local employment and skills enhancement opportunities, and the collaboration with the local community to develop a regional master plan to ensure that the mine’s presence leaves a positive and lasting legacy to the surrounding communities.
Lachlan’s extensive experience living and working in Europe, Asia, Africa and Eastern Australia has shown him how advanced our energy and mining industries are.
“Having worked around the world, I believe we are world leaders in mining practice by a long stretch” says Lachlan.
