Discovering South Australia’s world-class seafood industry.
Recognised internationally for its world-class fisheries and aquaculture management, South Australia’s clean waters are home to some of the world’s most sought-after, premium seafood which is exported all over the world.
Rex Bichard is a 63 year-old wild catch abalone diver, at home in the seas of South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula. After 40 years in the industry, Rex continues to choose South Australia for the opportunities that lie in our pristine waters.
Seafood runs in Rex’s family, with two of his daughters now learning the ropes to contribute to the 625 tonnes of abalone produced in South Australia each year and exported globally. It is an industry generating over 22 million for the state.
Rex is the oldest diver in his industry, and holds one of only 34 abalone licences in South Australia.
Abalone diving is not for the faint-hearted, but Rex wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I feel at peace on the ocean floor diving for our world-class abalone,” says Rex.
“We should feel proud that we produce such a premium and clean product that is in high demand around the world.”
Lana Harvey knows when she’s spotted a premium fish. Then within hours the product is on a plane to some of Australia’s best restaurants. A Wholesale Logistics Manager at the Fresh Fish Place in Port Lincoln, Lana chooses to live in South Australia to be at the heart of one of the best fishing industries in the world.
Every day Lana waits in anticipation for the boats to deliver their catch to the factory door. Living in the seafood capital of Australia, Lana experiences first-hand the high demand for our premium, clean seafood.
Port Lincoln is renowned for its clean and pristine waters, which consistently produce world-class seafood thanks to the industry’s strong sustainability practices and aquaculture management.
“I love living in Port Lincoln. It’s a beautiful fishing environment and I am proud to be part of the industry,” says Lana.
“It’s often a struggle to keep up with the demand because our product really is second to none.”
