Highlighting South Australia’s defence jobs revolution.
South Australia is the nation’s Defence State. With multiple projects underway, the industry is generating job opportunities across major construction projects, associated supply chains, the broader defence sector, and within the fast-growing cyber security space.
Jessica Caston is the Test and Activation Operations Manager for ASC Shipbuilding. Jessica chooses to stay in South Australia to be part of some of the most complex ship builds in Australia’s history.
Jessica’s highly-skilled team is responsible for the final stages of the shipbuilding process. They ensure that all ship systems, like steering and propulsion, are fully functional before handing the vessel over to the Commonwealth Government.
With a background in strategy, people and project management, Jessica has built a career in this industry. She believes the scope and scale of current and future shipbuilding projects, like the Air Warfare Destroyers currently being built by the AWD Alliance, will create and sustain thousands of careers for decades to come.
“Our people’s passion, pride and capability has been a fundamental component of what we’ve been able to achieve here in South Australia,” says Jessica.
“These future shipbuilding projects are going to be a massive win for the state.”
Sharon Wilson is the Head of Industrial Strategy for BAE Systems Australia. Originally from Yorkshire UK, Sharon chooses to stay in South Australia to play her part in the Defence State’s high-tech jobs revolution.
Holding many roles during her 28 years at BAE, Sharon is now Head of Industrial Strategy, leading their transition through the world’s fourth industrial revolution – Industry 4.0.
Industry 4.0 has seen the development and sharing of data and technology, creating global opportunities for SA’s defence industry. A result is the evolution of many defence jobs; while people continue to work in production, there is now growth in robotic programming and digital management of a global supply chain.
Sharon’s strategic mind is responsible for overseeing these industrial shifts within BAE, like sourcing a machine to build specialised parts of aircrafts that are exported all over the world. There is only one machine of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and, thanks to Sharon, it’s based right here at Edinburgh Parks in SA.
Sharon says it’s important for the industry to think holistically about solutions, and to collaborate like never before in order to thrive in Industry 4.0.
“The benefits of this state’s burgeoning industry will have nation-wide benefits,” says Sharon.
