Small to medium enterprise is the backbone of South Australia’s economy, making up 98% of SA businesses. In fact, SME’s in SA have the highest survival rate in mainland Australia.
Peggy Veloudos is a co-founder of T BAR Purveyors of Tea. Born and brewed in South Australia, Peggy chooses to stay to be part of the thriving small business network.
Like many small businesses in SA, T BAR’s beginnings came from family, with Peggy’s childhood spent in a home where the kettle was always boiling. Now people as far as New York are sipping on a T BAR brew.
The brands’ loyal customers come back again and again for a taste of over 130 premium varieties of tea. Based out of a small warehouse in Adelaide’s western suburbs, Peggy’s tea leaves and infusions have been warming the hands of tea lovers in their two tea salons for over 20 years.
Peggy believes that South Australia is a great place to start and own a business.
“We’ve been able to build strong relationships with stockists, customers and distributors thanks to South Australia’s small business culture”, says Peggy.
“I wouldn’t start a business anywhere else.”
Darren Turner is the Managing Director of MiniJumbuk, Australia’s largest wool bedding manufacturer. Darren chooses to stay in South Australia to lead one of SA’s most successful small businesses.
Established in 1975 as a cottage industry in Naracoorte, MiniJumbuk is now a household name in Australia, sold in all major department stores and now a sought-after brand in China. Staying true to their roots, all products are still manufactured in the region using locally sourced wool.
During his 35 years at MiniJumbuk, Darren has built a passion for the product and its people. Employing 70 South Australians, MiniJumbuk is one of the largest employers in town.
“The town is important to us and we’re important to the town,” says Darren.
“As a small business, we have to work harder and think smarter than our larger counterparts – this thinking is at the heart of our success and has allowed us to build our home in Naracoorte.”
