Meet Sue and Garry Bracegirdle, Owners of Bracegirdle's House of Fine Chocolate
As the saying goes, it doesn’t matter what the question is, the answer is chocolate. And it doesn’t matter what your choice of chocolate is either, because Bracegirdle’s – Australia’s most awarded chocolatiers – has them all. Delicious, delicate and totally handmade.
“Colour, shape and complexity of flavour” is the Bracegirdle’s House of Fine Chocolate mantra.
The Glenelg store came into being in 2005, “We were really a dessert bar before anyone had heard of them,” says Sue.
Enter Sarah who turned up looking for a job with a desire to make amazing chocolates - Sue and Garry gave her the opportunity she wanted, and her Lemon and Hazelnut truffle won a gold medal. She led Bracegirdle’s on a path that has seen them nurture and support a fine crew of chocolatiers. Some of Adelaide’s top baristas also started their journeys making coffee at Bracegirdle's.
Fostering talent is important to both Sue and Garry, who also encourage their staff to undertake formal training, and have supported team members to travel and learn overseas as well. “One of our staff came in here as a retail manager and then made chocolates” says Sue. “Another of our award-winning chocolatiers actually started out washing dishes.”
Entering awards is an important component of their approach. “Competitions allow our team to put what they’ve learnt into practice and be judged against their peers,” explains Garry. “Seeing the progression of our staff is really satisfying for us.”
